Trospium Chloride

Trospium Chloride

Trospium Chloride is in the class of medication called antispasmodics. This is used for the treatment of overactive bladder. This develops your capability to regulate your urination by calming the muscles in the bladder. It helps to decrease feelings of needing to urinate right away, leaking urine, and frequent trips to the bathroom. Trospium Chloride comes as a tablet for oral use. Each tablet is available in the dosage strength of 20 mg. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already approved this product.

Overactive bladder is a disorder in which the bladder squeezes urine out at the wrong time. You can have this condition if you have two or more of the following symptoms:

  • You have the sudden or strong need to urinate right away
  • You urinate eight or more times a day and two or more times at night
  • You leak urine after a sudden or strong urge to urinate

Even if it’s not rare among older adults, overactive bladder is considered as not a usual part of aging. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms disrupt your life or distress you. You may as well have incontinence which is a loss of bladder control. If you have an overactive bladder, you may isolate yourself, feel embarrassed, or limit your work and social life. The good news is that a brief assessment can define whether there’s an exact cause for your overactive bladder symptoms.

Controlling overactive bladder frequently begins with behavioral strategies such as timed voiding, adder-holding techniques, and fluid schedules by your pelvic floor. If these strategies don’t support sufficient with your overactive bladder symptoms, prescriptions are accessible.

How does Trospium Chloride work?

Trospium Chloride is a type of drug called an antimuscarinic muscle relaxant. It relaxes the involuntary muscle that is found in the wall of the bladder.

The muscle in the wall of the bladder is called the detrusor muscle. At times it might contract in strong spasms. This is frequently stated as having an overactive bladder. The overactive detrusor muscle can increase in the number of times you need to pass urine or cause uncontrollable urges to pass urine. It may as well be an involuntary leakage of urine.

Trospium Chloride relaxes the detrusor muscle in the wall of the bladder. It does this by blocking receptors called muscarinic receptors that are found on the surface of the muscle cells. This inhibits acetylcholine which is an ordinary body chemical from acting on these receptors.

Usually, when acetylcholine acts on these receptors, it causes the detrusor muscle to contract and the bladder to empty. By blocking acetylcholine, this drug helps the muscle in the bladder wall to relax. This decreases unbalanced and involuntary contractions of the bladder. Thereby, it increases the capacity of the bladder to hold urine. In turn, this lessens the need to pass urine.

How to use Trospium Chloride?

This is to be taken usually twice a day by mouth. Each dose is taken on an empty stomach or 1 hour before meals. It is sometimes taken once a day at bedtime. The dosage will depend on your medical condition and response to the treatment. Swallow the tablet as a whole. Do not break or crush the tablet. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking any product that contains alcohol for 2 hours before and after taking this drug. Alcohol can destroy the long action of the drug and may increase side effects.

To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. You should not take more or less or take it more often than it is given by your doctor. Let your doctor know if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
