Where is Rosuvastatin Calcium used?

Rosuvastatin Calcium is used together with a proper diet to help lower bad fats and cholesterol like triglycerides or LDL. This will raise good cholesterol or HDL in the blood. Lowering bad cholesterol and raising a good one will reduce the risk of heart disease. It will also help to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Rosuvastatin Calcium is approved as a treatment for hypercholesterolemia. This is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent which is classified as a Statin. It is a variety of agents that prevents cholesterol build-up in the liver. This treatment has been already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

How does Rosuvastatin Calcium work?

Rosuvastatin Calcium is an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. It is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. In which it is an early and rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis.

This medication works to help lower cholesterol in two ways:

  • Increases the uptake and breakdown by the liver of cholesterol already in the blood
  • Blocks an enzyme in the liver, causing the liver to make less cholesterol

Along with diet, this drug lowers bad (LDL) cholesterol. This will also slow plaque build-up in arteries as part of a treatment plan to lower cholesterol to goal.

You may see results for lowering your bad cholesterol as soon as 2 to 4 weeks after starting using this treatment.

How is Rosuvastatin Calcium taken?

The recommended dosage will depend on your medical condition and response. This is usually taken 5 mg to 40 mg once a day. You may take it with or without food. Take it regularly to get the most benefit. Take it exactly as it is prescribed by your doctor. Do not double the prescribed dosage.

An antacid that has magnesium or aluminum can lessen the absorption of this medication. Therefore, if taking this type of antacid, take it at least 2 hours after this medicine. It is very important to continue to follow the advice from your doctor about exercise and diet. It may take up to 4 weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication.

Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take it at the same time each day. Even if you feel well keep taking this medication. People with high triglycerides or cholesterol do not feel sick.
