Where is Risedronate Sodium?

Risedronate Sodium is used to treat and prevent a type of bone damage in adults called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break without difficulty. After menopause, your chance of developing osteoporosis rises. There is also a possibility if you are taking corticosteroid medicines for a long time.

This medicine can also be used for the treatment of Paget’s disease of bone. This drug is a pyridinyl bisphosphonate that prevents osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Risedronate Sodium belongs to the class of medications known as bisphosphonates. In the year 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this prescription.

How does Risedronate Sodium work?

Bone is continually shaped and rebuilt by cells called osteoclasts and osteoblasts. These cells continuously deposit and remove phosphorus and calcium that are stored in a protein network that makes up the structure of the bone. Osteoclasts make the old bones broken down and osteoblasts are forming a new bone.

In Paget’s disease of bone, there is a disturbance in the normal metabolism of bone. There is an irregular development of new bone by osteoblasts and an increase in the bone breakdown by the osteoclasts. The common bone marrow also becomes changed with fibrous tissue and blood vessels. In this illness, there are frequently no symptoms for several years. However, over time the bones can become deformed, enlarged, weak, painful, and prone to breaking. The deformed and enlarged bones may also put pressure on nerves that cause muscle weakness and muscle pain.

Risedronate Sodium binds very firmly to the bone to prevent the calcium from being removed by the osteoclasts. This prevents the osteoclasts from breaking down the bone. The reduced bone turnover helps lessen the deformity and keep the bone strong and less likely to break.

How is Risedronate Sodium taken?

This is taken by mouth after getting up for the day and before having your first meal or other medication. Do not take a dose at bedtime or while you are still in bed. Swallow the medicine as a whole with a full glass of water. Do not take the medicine with other beverages.

Stay fully upright for 30 minutes and you should not lie down until after your first meal of the day. If your doctor gave you a dosing instruction, follow it promptly. Do not twice the dosage to avoid complications.
