Where is Procyclidine Hydrochloride used?

Procyclidine Hydrochloride is a prescription medicine used to treat and relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as:

• Problems writing, talking, and walking
• Stiff muscles, paralysis, and tremor
• Sweating and uncontrolled eye movements
• Producing too much saliva and dribbling
• Depression

This medication may also be used to stop side effects called extrapyramidal effects which are caused by certain medications. These might include signs similar to Parkinson’s disease and unusual body and head movements. These effects are also called drug-induced movement disorders.

Procyclidine Hydrochloride is a type of medicine called anticholinergic and sometimes called antimuscarinics. This blocks a certain natural substance. This helps decrease sweating, muscle stiffness, and improves walking ability.

How does Procyclidine Hydrochloride work?

Procyclidine Hydrochloride is an anticholinergic medicine that prevents the activity of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. In Parkinson’s disease, there is a deficiency of a neurotransmitter called dopamine in the brain. Wherein, it causes the overactivity of acetylcholine. This medicine blocks the receptors that acetylcholine acts on and decreases the activity of acetylcholine. As a result, it helps restore the balance of acetylcholine and dopamine in the brain. In this way, Procyclidine Hydrochloride helps control some of the symptoms of the disease.

How is Procyclidine Hydrochloride taken?

The recommended dosage is based on your medical condition, age, and response to the treatment. Your doctor may direct you to start at a lower dose and eventually increase it. You should take the right dose, not more or less. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without the consent of your doctor. It may cause another complication or may worsen your current condition.

Procyclidine Hydrochloride is usually taken 3 to 4 times a day after meals and at bedtime or as directed by your doctor. You must take each tablet by mouth. Swallow the tablet as a whole with a full glass of water.

If you are taking antacids, take this medication at least an hour before you take antacids. Allow at least 1to 2 hours between doses of Procyclidine Hydrochloride and certain drugs for diarrhea. Antacids and some drugs for diarrhea may prevent the full absorption of this product. It may also prevent full absorption if the medicines are taken together. When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing.

What are the possible side effects of Procyclidine Hydrochloride?

• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Light-headedness
• Abdominal pain
• Vomiting
• Weakness
• Dry mouth

Tell your doctor right away if you have serious side effects such as:

• Severe stomach or abdominal pain
• Painful or difficulty swallowing
• Difficulty urinating

What are the precautions in taking Procyclidine Hydrochloride?

• Let your doctor know if you have any medical history such as heart problems, high/low blood pressure, certain nerve disease, and kidney disease.
• This causes decreased sweating which can cause a severe rise in your body temperature. Drink plenty of fluids and dress lightly while in hot weather and when exercising.
• This prescription should not be given to children.
• Do not use this for the treatment of other illnesses without the consent of your doctor.
• This should only be used when needed in pregnant women. If you are a breastfeeding women, consult your doctor first before using this medicine.
