Where is Norethindrone used?

Norethindrone is a man-made form of progesterone which is a naturally occurring female sex hormone. This is used for the treatment of abnormal bleeding from the uterus in women. This is also used for those who have stopped having menstrual periods for several months (amenorrhea). It happens to those who are not pregnant or going through menopause. Also, this is used to treat endometriosis. It is a tissue that normally lines inside of the uterus is found outside the uterus in the abdomen/pelvic area. It causes an irregular or painful period.

This is a type of female hormone or progestin. It is like the hormone that your body produces naturally. This medication comes in tablet form for oral use. In the year 1982, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this medication.

How does Norethindrone work?

Norethindrone works by imitating the effects of your natural progesterone. Your progesterone levels commonly change during your monthly menstrual cycle. As progesterone levels increase your womb lining flourishes it is ready to receive a fertilized egg. If you don’t get pregnant the levels fall again that causes your womb lining to be shed as a period. If you don’t get pregnant, your progesterone levels remain high to help maintain a healthy womb lining for the ongoing pregnancy.

How is Norethindrone taken?

The recommended dosage is based on your medical condition and response to the treatment. This medication is to be taken by mouth. Each dose may be taken with or without food or after a meal to prevent an upset stomach. Take it regularly or as directed by your doctor. Follow the prescription of your doctor carefully. To avoid complications, do not twice the given dosage.

This medicine is usually taken once a day. Pick a time of day that is easy for you to remember and take each dose at the same time each day. If possible, do not take the medicine after your evening meal or at bedtime. It will increase the risk of having stomach upset and nausea.
