Where is Clindamycin Hydrochloride used?

Clindamycin Hydrochloride is used in the treatment of serious infections that are caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria.

This medication should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria. The misuse or unnecessary use of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Clindamycin Hydrochloride is an antibiotic that is effective against several types of bacteria such as:

  • Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Propionibacterium acnes
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis

Clindamycin Hydrochloride is a semisynthetic antibiotic. It is the hydrated hydrochloride salt of clindamycin. Each capsule has 75mg, 150mg, or 300mg of clindamycin hydrochloride. This medication was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the year 1970.

How does Clindamycin Hydrochloride work?

Clindamycin Hydrochloride belongs to a group of medications known as lincomycin or lincosamide antibiotics. This treatment works by preventing the bacteria from making the protein they need to reproduce. This also prevents the spread of infection in your body.

How is Clindamycin Hydrochloride taken?

The recommended dosage for Clindamycin Hydrochloride:

  • For serious infections in adults – 150 to 300 mg every 6 hours
  • For more severe infections in adults – 300 to 450 mg every 6 hours
  • For serious infections in children – 8 to 16 mg/kg each day that is divided into 3 or 4 equal doses
  • For more severe infections in children – 16 to 20 mg/kg each that is 3-4 equal doses

You may take the medicine with or without food. After taking it, do not lie down for at least 10 minutes. For the best effect, use this regularly or as exactly as directed by your doctor. To avoid some complications, do not double the prescribed dosage. Call your doctor if you missed a dose. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.

What are the possible side effects of Clindamycin Hydrochloride?

  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Heartburn
  • Changes in bowel habits especially in older adults
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Sore throat

Inform your doctor if these serious side effects happen:

  • Jaundice or yellowing of eyes/skin
  • Dark urine
  • Changes in the amount of urine

Call for medical help if there is an allergic reaction and an overdose occurs.

What are the precautions in taking Clindamycin Hydrochloride?

  • Inform your doctor if you have any medical history, current treatments, or any allergies.
  • If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to get pregnant, consult your doctor first before taking this drug.
  • You should not share this with others even if they have the same symptoms as yours.
  • While using this medication, do not have any vaccinations/immunizations.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had allergies, kidney or liver disease, asthma, eczema (sensitive skin that frequently becomes irritated or itchy).
  • If you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine after the expiry date printed on the pack or if the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering.
