Atovaquone and Proguanil Hydrochloride are used to prevent and treat malaria. It is caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can go in the body through these mosquito bites. They may also live in body tissues such as red blood cells and other tissues. For some, you may need to take another medication to complete your treatment. Both medications may be needed for a complete cure. It will also prevent the return of the infection.

How do Atovaquone and Proguanil Hydrochloride work?

Atovaquone blocks mitochondrial electron transfer. Therefore, the productions of energy for use by the parasites are also blocked. Proguanil Hydrochloride is metabolized into its active metabolite called cycloguanil. It blocks dihydrofolate reductase and enzymes needed for making pyrimidine which is a chemical needed for the production of DNA.

Atovaquone and Proguanil Hydrochloride belong to the class of medications called antimalarials. This is a fixed-dose combination of antimalarial agents. These medicines stop any malarial parasites that have been entered the blood. Malarial parasites may also enter the liver from reproducing and increasing in numbers. Atovaquone and Proguanil Hydrochloride are supplied as tablets for oral use. Each tablet contains 250 mg of Atovaquone and 100 mg of Proguanil Hydrochloride. This prescription is already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

How to use Atovaquone and Proguanil Hydrochloride?

The recommended dosage is based on your medical condition, age, and response. Take it exactly as it is prescribed. Do not take more often or more than it is given by your doctor. The tablet is to be swallowed as a whole with a full glass of water.

This medication is to be taken by mouth. You may take each dose with food or a milky drink that contains fat. Repeat the dose if you vomit an hour of taking this drug.
