Meclizine HCL is used to prevent and treat dizziness, nausea, and vomiting caused by motion sickness. This medication may also be used to decrease dizziness and loss of balance or vertigo caused by inner ear problems. Vertigo is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear. It may also be because of certain problems in some parts of the brain.
Meclizine HCL works by stopping histamine from binding to its receptors in an area in the brain known as the vomiting center. The vomiting center is responsible for causing feelings of sickness and for the vomiting reflex. It is activated when it receives nerve messages from the vestibular apparatus in the middle ear. By blocking the histamine receptors in the vomiting center, Meclizine HCL prevents disturbances in the middle ear from activating the vomiting center.
Meclizine HCL is in the class of drugs called antihistamines. This works in your brains and blocks certain chemicals that control nausea, vomiting, and balance. Meclizine HCL is supplied as tablets with the strengths of 12mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg. This is a prescription approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recommended dosage is based on your condition, age, and response to it. It is important that you take this medicine exactly as it is prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take this more often than it is given by your doctor.
Meclizine HCL is usually taken once a day. You may take each dose with or without food. Swallow the tablet as a whole with a full glass of water. Don’t forget to take it at the same time each day. Let your doctor know if your condition does not improve or it gets worse.
