Hytrin (Terazosin Hydrochloride) is for the treatment of hypertension. Lowering high blood pressure may help prevent heart attack, stroke, or kidney problems.
This medication may also be used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is also known as an enlarged prostate and it happens in men. This drug helps relieve symptoms of BPH such as:
- Weak stream
- Difficulty in beginning the flow of urine
- The need to urinate urgently or frequently
How does Hytrin (Terazosin Hydrochloride) work?
Terazosin is selective for alpha-1-adrenoceptors. The inhibition of these alpha-1-adrenoceptors results in relaxation of smooth muscle in blood vessels and the prostate. It lowers blood pressure and improves urinary flow. Smooth muscle cells account for roughly of the prostate and so their relaxation reduces pressure on the urethra.
For hypertension, this drug relaxes the blood vessels. It is to let the blood flow more easily. For BPH, it also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and part of the bladder.

Hytrin (Terazosin Hydrochloride) belongs to the class of drugs called alpha-blockers. It comes as a tablet with an active ingredient of Terazosin Hydrochloride. It is a white, crystalline substance that is freely soluble in water. It is available in the strengths of 1 mg, 2 mg, 5mg, and 10 mg for oral use. This medication was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
How to use Hytrin (Terazosin Hydrochloride)?
Hytrin (Terazosin Hydrochloride) is to be taken by mouth usually once daily at bedtime. You may take each dose with or without food. For best result, remember to take it at the same time every day.
The recommended dosage is based on your medical condition and response. Your doctor will start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose.
